Sometimes
we start out with the best intentions to think and speak only positive
thoughts, but the people around us can throw us off course.
You may be sitting there, having a pleasant conversation with a decent bunch of people, when suddenly, before you know it, the conversation turns to - yes, criticising and complaining.
It can be some small innocent comment, such as the increasing cost of the meals in the restaurant, which will invariably escalate to a ‘ping pong' dialogue, consisting of complaints and gripes about the employer or company.
I have often noticed, that there will always be a chronic complainer. You know, someone whose sole aim in life is to find something to complain about and to find others to join them. Unfortunately, their complaint is rarely anything of a constructive nature, which could lead to a force for positive change in the office or environment.
Recently, I was talking to a colleague about a new procedure that had been introduced to my team, when I had been away on holiday. My colleague began explaining the procedure, complaining consistently over every aspect, that she thought was a waste of time. Before I knew it, I too was drawn into the spiral of negativity, and as I did so, I began to feel uncomfortable, as I sensed the spirit of anger welling up inside me. As I walked back to my desk, I was ashamed, that I, a women of God who knew better, had resorted to such behaviour. The words - 'Grieve not the Holy Spirit', echoed in my mind, as I began to reflect on the course of events. "Please forgive me, God!", I whispered, as I shuffled a stack of papers, noisily on my desk.
God is greater than any circumstance, that we will find ourselves in. As followers of Christ, God wants us to be different from the world, we are to be distinctive. Complaining and criticising are sinful.
Philippians 2:14-16 (NIV.)
Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out[the word of life—in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing.
Are you a Chronic Complainer or how do you handle the constant complaints of others?

Hi Carol, it's so easy to get caught up in the downward spiral of complaining. Isn't wonderful that we have the Holy Spirit that will convict and correct us?
You are so right! I love this post. In fact, I often say, "NO!," out-loud to my self when I start to say or think in a negative way. Boy, does this throw people for a loop! They probably think I'm bonkers, but I'm simply saying to myself, "No More!" I ask the Jesus to send His Holy Spirit to help me rebuke my complaining and negativity and it works. I'm a living testimony!
My mother is Really BAD!Complainer
I pray one day she finds God...
Hi Carole ~ So nice to read a post from you. This one is so very true and such a good reminder. I too can get caught up in the complaining mill at my office. I have to constantly remind myself that it's not a practice I should participate in.
Blessings to you...Chelle
Hi Carole,
You spoke straight into my heart with this post; I find myself surrounded by these challenges (almost!) every day in my office environment. I start every morning with a prayer to God to speak to my heart throughout the day and guide me through any confrontations with an attitude of humility and compassion. It's not easy, and I am tested from all directions; thank goodness He sends me constant reminders! :)
Blessings and hugs, :)
Denise
Wanda,
I thank God that His Holy Spirit ‘lifts’ us up when we are falling.
Cynthia,
I am delighted that you have seen a change in your life, since the Holy Spirit has helped you to rebuke complaining and negativity. The Lord is doing a deep work within me about this topic.
RJ,
I pray that God will do a new thing in the life of your Mother.....soon!
Hi Chelle,
Nice to hear from you too.
I have to constantly set my mind and keep it set on the things of God, and remind myself, is what I am doing or saying glorifying God.
Denise,.
It’s amazing how God speaks to us through the post of another Blogger, and it is always at the right time. It certainly helps when we know that others are experiencing the same situation, we are not on our own!
I totally identify with this. At our work place, there are several people who constantly complain. It can be all too easy to pipe in and go along with it. There are times when I try to put a positive slant on the situation. But often they will keep on complaining. It's amazing how a few can spoil the atmosphere for all.
Blessings and love,
Debbie
Great post! It is so easy for us to get entangled in this web. It creeps up on us and before we even realize it we can be caught.
Debbie, Nice to see you here again.
it is such a constant battle trying to be positive in a negative world, but the Lord gives us the grace to do so, we just have to keep plugging away at it, until it becomes natural to us.

Hi Welcome to your first visit to the Faith Lounge and thank you for joining the discussion.
I pray you were greatly refreshed. The enemy weaves His web in such cunning and intricate ways and Chronic Complaining can trap us so easily. Thank God for the Blood of Jesus, the help of the Holy Spirit and His Word which are our weapons of warefare against the wiles of the enemy.
I think we can all get sucked in sometimes..especially when the complaining is coming from a "superior" at work. You are such a Godly woman Carol and it is an honor to know you.
I bet you almost NEVER complain :)
Blessing!
I don't think I am a cronic complainer, but my mom is. Sometimes I say things and worry I'll wind up like that! LOL. It usually straightens me right up.
I myself try not to sweat the little things and I don't like to complain about the little things. I may have had my days when something made me complain to others, but I try not to.
I know people that complain about everything. I also used to work with people that would complain about everything. At work, I used to try to avoid talking with them. It was a different situation as I used to be a bus driver and could go to my bus and not be listening. Or we used to try to avoid certain people at lunch, if we met up to eat somewhere and these people would pull in we would leave. It just gets the whole crowd in a blah mood and we really didn't want to hear it.

Aw! Thank you for your comments. I give God all the glory. I have come a mighty loooong way from the complaining person I used to be. I just take ALL my complaints to God!

Point your Mum to my post. Maybe she doesn't see herself as a Chronic Complainer :)
I have learnt to 'check' myself now before being tempted to join in with complaining.
Blessings to you.
We are on the same page, Carole! The tongue is truly hard to tame, but we are not alone in this struggle to stay positive. The Word gives us the ammunition to overcome the negative thought that turns into a negative word. Great post!
Alison, you are so right, we are not alone in this struggle and that is something we must remember. That the Holy Spirit will help, we just have to ask.
Thanks for popping by, God Bless.
Hi Carole -
Great message. Certainly, we all need such reminders.
Thank you!
Hi Lioneagle
Thanks for popping by and joining the discussion your comment is appreciated.
God Bless
Yep! I think that's the "devil at his best!" He is SO sneaky and subtile! Just like he can take a perfectly good and innocent comment, change a couple of words around and make it the most BURNING CRITICAL and hurtful statement! I am so thankful that I have the Holy Spirit within me to nudge me and let me know when I have said something wrong so that I can ask forgiveness and repent. I also know that I have fallen short in that area, so that is when I ask God to search my heart for "hidden sins" and bring them to light so that I can repent for them. I would hate for something I didn't realize I had done to keep me from heaven. OOPS! I definitely got on a rabbit trail! Sorry about that. Please forgive me. God bless!
PJ
Thanks for joining the conversation PJ.
I am so working on prayer against the spirit of complaining.
I too am so grateful for the Holy Spirit's correction when I have missed the mark.
I love how you speak on your blog.
You are so natural. I'll be hopping over there again soon.
God bless you more.
